THE ABSTRACT EYE

At our invite-only luncheon tomorrow, May 13, at Helix Park, we’ll hear about investing in art from Mont Art House’s Beth Werner.

At Tidbits & Takeaways tomorrow, May 13, at Helix Park, we’ll explore the intersection of fashion and fine art with our two panelists, local designer Christy Lynn Lee and Mont Art House’s Beth Werner, pictured. Today, we’re chatting with Beth about building an art collection at home.

You are a consultant for Mont Art House, a casual gallery on Houston Avenue that partners with established and emerging artists. How has Mont taken the intimation factor out of collecting?
We talk in layman’s terms. It’s okay to like something just because it’s yellow. You don’t have to know what style of work it is done in or the artist the work is derivative of to appreciate it.

3 tips for starting an art collection.
1. Don’t rule out what you already have. Sometimes family heirlooms or even your children’s artwork just needs new framing or placement in the home!
2. Diversify. Mixing mediums from photography to sculpture, canvas to work on paper, is going to give your home more interest.
3. Hire someone to help you explore your options. Did you know there are over 60 art galleries in Houston alone?

Tell us about Mont Art House’s consultation services.
Let’s be honest, the art world can be overwhelming and intimidating! It’s like trying to decipher a secret language sometimes, so we are happy to be the translator. Hiring someone to navigate the endless sea of galleries, auctions, and studios on your behalf can save you time, stress, and money in the end.

Do you allow customers to take art out on approval?
Yes. We want all our artists’ work to find the right home and all our clients to find the right piece. There is no hidden agenda, so if you need to spend some time with the art in your home before committing, we are happy to accommodate.

New arrivals or artists at the gallery you are excited about?
We are thrilled we have some really vibrant work coming this summer from two new artists. We also will be getting a fresh inventory of beautiful Diana Garrett pieces.

In addition to using small works of art and sculptures, where do you send people for items for styling shelves?
Pick up quirky and colorful knick knacks when you travel or antique shop. Or even at Home Goods. When things speak to you or even make you laugh, grab them. They then become conversation pieces and building blocks for shelves that tell your story rather than look fresh out of a magazine.

The invitation-only Tidbits & Takeaways lunch is open to women in fields related to fashion, retail and the arts. If you’d like to attend, send a note to rsvp@gotidbits.com with your name and job title, and we’ll reach back out with event details.
