CHATTING INTERIORS WITH MARIE FLANIGAN

Interior designer Marie Flanigan is one of the panelists at the next Tidbits & Takeaways, our lunch series at Helix Park that shines a light on Houston women leading their industries.

Marie, you are an interior designer and the Principal of Marie Flanigan Interiors. Do you remember the moment you knew you wanted this career?
Yes! While working in commercial architecture, I realized my true passion was in the details—the way a space comes alive through personal touches. I wanted to design environments that told people’s stories, not just served a function. That’s when I knew interior design was my path.

How did you carve out a space for yourself in the industry?
Earning my MBA in marketing helped me understand how to build a brand, but ultimately, great work speaks for itself. Consistency, integrity, and creating value for clients have been the foundation of our growth.

Any commercial projects where people may have seen your work?
We focus mostly on residential design, but one standout commercial project is a private Mercedes-Benz showroom that merges luxury with intimacy.

You have an e-commerce site and eponymous product line. Why expand beyond residential and commercial projects?
Design should be accessible to everyone. Our online shop and product line let us share our philosophy with a wider audience—helping people create homes that feel personal and inspiring, even without hiring a designer.

How has social media impacted your industry?
It’s completely transformed the way we connect. Social media lets us share our work in real time and engage with a global community of design lovers—it’s made inspiration more open and collaborative than ever.

What are three starter tips for someone decorating a space who can’t afford to hire a professional?

  1. Start with a neutral foundation for flexibility.
  2. Invest in lighting—it changes everything.
  3. Curate meaningful pieces rather than cluttering your space.

Your favorite places in Houston to search for unusual objects to fill a space.
AREA, Found for the Home, Lam Bespoke, and Back Row Home—they all offer unique finds that add instant character.

Round Top is going on now. Favorite places to hit?
Marburger Farm and Blue Hills are must-visits.

Of what brand partnerships are you most proud?
Our lighting collection with Visual Comfort & Co. is a favorite—it marries timeless design with a modern sensibility and allows us to reach people in a new way.

What’s next for Marie Flanigan Interiors?
We’re continuing to expand our product offerings and e-commerce presence, while staying true to our mission: creating spaces that reflect the beauty of the people who live in them.
