HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ASHLEY

Today’s Tidbits Birthday Girl is Ashley Rose, founder of The Juliana and Sugar & Cloth. Each month we celebrate a local business owner.

Happy birthday! How many candles are you blowing out this year?
35!

How are you celebrating your birthday?
Launching a new endeavor to be able to share more of my art.

What’s on your birthday wish list?
A large Hulken bag for my many trips to and from The Juliana.

Best place in Houston for celebratory cocktails?
Bungalow Heights is my current go-to.

You launched Sugar & Cloth in 2011, but always dreamed of owning your own event space. In 2022 you opened The Juliana, pictured below. 3 tips for hosting an unforgettable event?
-Pick your “hero” element, such as a statement fabric, centerpiece, or catch phrase, and then build the rest of the event around that.

-It’s always better to have too much when it comes to sips and bites than too little.

-Whatever the vibe of the party, always make sure you’re keeping your guests’ perspective in mind.

Finish this sentence. The Juliana is the perfect setting for:
A golden hour dinner al fresco.

How do Sugar & Cloth and The Juliana complement each other?
Entertaining and party inspiration has always been a large part of Sugar & Cloth, so having a place to host those ideas made for the perfect pair.

What sets The Juliana apart?
The fact that you are fully surrounded by  greenery and dancing light shining through the trees right in the heart of the loop.

When it comes to planning an event, what should we save on and splurge on?
If you pick a venue that’s already interesting and classic, then you can save on decorating plain industrial ballroom walls to spend on memorable moments that will keep people talking,  like live music or an interactive chef station.

The Juliana was recently the backdrop for Simone Biles’ wedding shower… Tell us about other favorite events you’ve hosted.
We recently hosted a Veuve themed engagement party with Decor 2 Remember and Kashmere productions that was absolutely stunning, and Shawna Collins Events NEVER disappoints with her wildly creative party themes.

As a content creator, what’s your advice for social media?
Be authentic rather than conform to a trend. Nothing creates burn out and less-than-stellar content more than trying to be like someone else.

Dream event to host at The Juliana?
I would absolutely love to host a concert series!

You’re a mom to two girls. What lessons do you hope they absorb when they see you helming The Juliana?
That you can hustle to fulfill your passion and career dreams from the ground up, while also making your family feel seen, heard and loved.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, where are we most likely to find you?
My local favorite for on-the-go is The Taco Stand, and Millie’s for dinner.

Your daily uniform?
These “dressy” tapered pants that feel like loungewear and a black tee. The 24-inch inseam makes for the perfect cropped fit for the petite gals.

Always in your work bag or clutch.
Airpod Pros and my Bandolier strap for keeping my phone on me during events.

An app you can’t live without in your job?
If you haven’t gotten Shift for Gmail yet, it is LIFE-CHANGING. It will consolidate all of your email logins, apps, and internet bookmarks into one clean window to toggle between.

Mantra you live (or work) by.
Work mantra: “start somewhere.”  Life mantra “do the right thing even when no one is watching.”

Best concert ever.
Rihanna is still one of my favorite concert memories!

One thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
As much as I travel, I still loathe/fear flying.

Best vacation you’ve ever taken
Exuma, Bahamas. A sleepy island with stunning water and the kindest people.

Go-to perfume.
Constantly getting comments on this

What is your sign and do you identify with it?
A Taurus Gemini Cusp and yes, I am definitively the go-the-extra-mile cheerleader type, ha!

First job ever.
Limited Too! It was a wild ride organizing that accessory corner…
