Happy Birthday Jennifer of Ruby Slipper Café!

In our Birthday Girl series, we toast a local business owner on her special day. Happy birthday to Jennifer Weishaupt, Founder and CEO of Ruby Slipper Café.

Happy birthday to Jennifer Weishaupt, Founder and CEO of Ruby Slipper Café, which now has 14 locations.

Where does the name Ruby Slipper come from?
We opened our first Ruby Slipper Cafe in Mid-City New Orleans, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I brought tons of name ideas to my husband and none really stuck. Then I was listening to WWOZ, the local jazz radio station, and the program host was talking about a conversation she overheard between her teenage daughter and her friends.  They were catching up after a year of evacuation due to the hurricane. They discussed where they went and what they learned. Her daughter wisely said, “I learned that I grew up in Oz and everywhere else is just Kansas.” Ruby Slipper popped into my mind and expressed the sense of homecoming all of us New Orleanians felt after being able to return home. And surprisingly, my husband was on board with glittery red high heels becoming the symbol of the restaurant!
Best menu item for celebrating the holidays at Ruby Slipper?
I’m in love with our new Winter Specials, which launch this week. The Red Eye Benedict featuring our Coffee-Glazed Ham, the Cranberry and Orange Curd Pancakes and the Sweet Potato Praline Stuffed French Toast are all delicious and bring so many of the season’s best flavors together.
What are your favorite spots for a birthday nightcap in NOLA?
I love bubbles, red wine and Hendricks Gin, and my go to places are Effervescence, Swirl Wine Bar, Wrong Iron, Bayou Wine Garden and Pal’s.
What neighborhood do you call home?
I live in Faubourg St. John and spend most of my time there and in Mid-City, where our office is located.  I love both neighborhoods for our amazing neighbors and the many beautiful green spaces like City Park, Bayou St. John and the Lafitte Greenway, and of course the abundance of fabulous places to eat and drink.
What are your favorite New Orleans phrases or words?
Lagniappe - In fact, I like the idea of giving someone a little extra so much that I included it in our company-wide mission statement.
Bless Your Heart – I think this is the quintessential Southern phrase.  It sounds so sweet and yet it’s so salty – kinda like me!
Who Dat! - I love the Saints and the Who Dat Nation.
Who's your business icon?
I’m a huge fan of Marcus Lemonis.
How are you celebrating your birthday this year?
A long weekend in Charleston with my husband, Erich. We’ve never been before and I’m so excited!
What’s on your birthday gift wish list?
Red and rose gold are my signature colors. I’m hoping after a red quilted down vest and a red leather belt, along with some beautiful rose gold jewelry from Kendra Scott.
How many candles are you blowing out?
46 and loving every one of them!
