Despite a substantial literature examining personality, prejudice, and related constructs such as Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) and Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), there have been no systematic reviews in this area. We, ed, including differences in personality inventory (NEO. Specific beliefs may thus attenuate the generalized, or “default” effect of personality dispositions on pre-, judicial attitudes. In addition, a number of studies in, recent years have examined more generalized forms of, prejudice, by extracting a single broad-bandwidth factor, from scales assessing attitudes toward multiple outgroups. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between the Big Five personality traits and tolerance toward foreign residents in Japan, and to examine the moderating effect of the population ratio of foreign residents in a residential area on these associations. 4. And second, the findings raise the tentative possi-, bility that not all effects of personality on prejudice may, be mediated by ideological attitudes and that there may be, a weak direct effect of Openness to Experience on preju-. Demagogues essentially facilitate the Freudian defence mechanism of “projection”, whereby the Authoritarian Personality is saved from conscious awareness of inner anxieties regarding his/her own inadequacy as these are externalised and transferred to outgroups in society.  Duckitt also explains that demagogues are motivated by power, wealth and success and they are often cynical, manipulative and charismatic enough to use others to try and achieve these goals. This finding raises the interesting possi-, bility that broad cultural and situational factors that are, shared across a number of European nations (primarily, Belgium and Sweden) contribute to a social context in, which people who are more conscientious tend to be, slightly higher in both SDO and RWA relative to North, what such factors might be, and why cross-cultural differ-, ences were only observed for Conscientiousness, but not, the other four dimensions of personality we examined, in, We next considered possible moderating factors in, the association between personality and prejudice. This suggests that people low in, Agreeableness and Openness to Experience may operate, “by default” using behavioral tendencies and related, knowledge and beliefs that members of other groups “out, there” are generally inferior, weaker, and less deserving, (in the case of SDO motivations stemming from low, Agreeableness) and more threatening, immoral, and, deviant compared with “us” (in the case of RWA motiva-, tions stemming from low Openness to Experience). However, the low to moderate associa-, tions for Big Five personality dimensions with RWA and, SDO seemed more consistent with the DPM model and, others (e.g., Jost et al., 2003; Wilson, 1973) who have, viewed RWA and SDO as ideological social attitudes, rather than personality dimensions. First, the authoritar-, ian personality approach, which proposed a direct link, between personality and prejudice, was revived and ampl, fied by Altemeyer (1998) in terms of the two individual-, difference dimensions of Right-Wing Authoritarianism. Neuroticism, in con-, trast, exhibited comparable associations with SDO and, RWA across these two broad geographical regions but, was more strongly correlated with prejudice in North, American samples. A conspiracy theory can be broadly defined as a set of oversimplified and in many cases false beliefs in omnipresent and nefarious groups, that are driven by harmful and evil aims, and that coordinate the activities that they organise. Demagogues usually oppose deliberation and advocate immediate, violent action to address a national crisis; they accuse moderate and thoughtful opponents of weakness. This decline was due, partly to theoretical and methodological problems in, Adorno et al.’s (1950) approach to the authoritarian, personality and partly to Pettigrew’s (1959) compelling, empirical demonstrations that this approach could not, account for social group differences in prejudice. It is possible, however, that person-, ality may exert a stronger effect on more generalized, forms of prejudice because such forms prejudice are more, abstracted and thus less likely to be influenced by specific, attitudes and cognitions anchored to knowledge or expe-.
