Happy Birthday, Vanessa of Ooh La La!

Today's birthday girl is Vanessa O'Donnell, owner of Ooh La La, the dessert bakery in Town & Country and Katy.

Happy birthday, Vanessa! What cupcake at Ooh La La, the bakery you founded, will you be eating to celebrate?
Our Pretty n Pink (strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting)!

What libation pairs best with a treat from Ooh La La?
Demi sec champagne or sparking wine would go well with pretty much any of our desserts.

How old were you when you learned to cook? 
I was 11 years old when I learned to bake something from scratch on my own. Before 11 I was baking, but from box mix. The first thing I ever baked was chocolate chip cookies.

What was the first cupcake you mastered?
Our red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.

What's the wackiest cupcake you've ever created?
A jalapeño and honey cupcake. It was wonderful but we couldn’t convince our guests to buy it—it was a BIG flop!

Where do you buy your aprons?
Anthropologie—they're colorful, practical and very feminine! I just purchased a Hedley & Bennett apron and I tell ya, I’m sold—it’s one of the best.
When it's not a cupcake, what are your late night cravings?
Either the old time Circus Peanuts or Good & Plenty.
Item in the kitchen you couldn't live without?
My measuring cups!
Largest cupcake order Ooh La La has ever gotten?
180 dozen.

How do you work off all the desserts you create and bake? 
Chasing my daughter Clementine, ha! I honestly do not work out as much as I’d like to. 

Your daily uniform.
A lot of denim paired with a fun sneaker for a pop of color and whimsy.

For a girl’s day out you usually suggest…
Brunch at Tiny Boxwoods, shopping at Kuhl-Linscomb and dinner at El Tiempo Cantina-Montrose.

What’s the most underrated thing about Houston?
Our graffiti mural art walls around the city—we have some really good ones. 

Who's your business icon?
Candace Nelson from Sprinkles and Sara Blakely, creator of Spanx.

What's in your clutch?
Louis Vuitton wallet, Bach Remedy Stress Relief lozenge, snacks for my daughter, iPhone, hand sanitizer and Smith’s Rosebud Salve.

Best part about owning a bakery?
Making food that brings a little bit of happy to people’s day. I believe that community happens around the table and the thought of our desserts being served at people's celebrations makes my heart swell!
