Happy Birthday, Roslyn!

Today's birthday girl is Roslyn Bazzelle, local attorney at WKPZ and co-founder of RoKi Design. Each month we celebrate a local business owner on her special day.

Happy birthday! How are you celebrating this year?
Keeping it small and having dinner at one of my favorite restaurants with my Derricks (small and tall) and my mother-in-law Mrs. Johnson.

How many candles are you blowing out?
Really!? 47.

What's on your birthday wish list?
Anything that comes in a white dress bag (Oscar de la Renta), red box (Cartier) or orange box (Hermes).

You and your friend Kimberly Phipps-Nichol are the founders of RoKi Design, specializing in limited edition silk scarves and up-cycled accessories made from authentic vintage luxury fabrics. Why did you start your brand?
Kimberly and I both have a passion for fashion, creative and community. RoKi Design is the perfect fusion of all three allowing us the opportunity to fulfill a purpose, collaborate with amazing artists to create fashionable and unique silk accessories and support the causes that are most important to us.

You use fabrics such as Hermes and Pucci – what’s your favorite brand to work from?
Pucci. We received a huge nod from Laudomia Pucci through our social media postings, when she positively commented on one of our images featuring a re-purposed mask made from a vintage Pucci scarf. As a thank you, we sent her one of our masks as a gift.

Do you remember the first designer scarf (or designer piece) you bought yourself?
My first designer scarf was from Hermes and was a Christmas gift from my husband. My first designer piece was a long time ago. I’ve been a lover of luxury goods for some time, especially handbags, and I purchased my first Mark Cross handbag in middle school using my babysitting earnings that I saved up for several months.

How many scarves do you own?
I currently own at least 50 scarves. My favorite scarf is my first custom scarf design for RoKi which is called the Nu Boule’ Archousai Scarf.

How do you wear scarves?
I style my scarves in several different ways, including as a top (as shown in my picture), tied around the neck, tied around the waist, as a hair accessory or even a bag accessory.

How do you use RoKi as design in your own home?
I have custom RoKi scarves hung on the walls of my home studio. I also have Kermit Oliver / Hermes scarves hung as art in my kitchen and I have pillows throughout my home made from luxury silk scarves.

You make everything from scarves and scrunchies to handbags and headbands. What are your best sellers?
Our best sellers over the past 18 months have actually been face masks and our custom silk scarves (Purpose Collection). After the world shut down due to the pandemic, we pivoted from our scarf production to creating fashionable face masks out of luxury scarves and that sustained our business. In addition, our purpose scarf collection has been very popular since the societal issues that have been at the forefront of our news and media have created a new audience which is intent on supporting small and local businesses as well as the community organizations that we are affiliated with.

From where do you source vintage scarves?
We source our scarves from all over the world through brokers and online resellers. Locally, we visit vintage shops, estate sales and resale shops and have found some both perfect and imperfect (which are the best) vintage scarves.

First thing you do when you wake up, last thing at night?
First thing I do in the morning is drink a tall glass of water and the last thing I do before I go to bed is drink water. My beauty secrets – sleep, eat healthy and drink tons of water.

Your daily uniform?
Jeans, t-shirt, a blazer, sneakers and a scarf!

Three apps I can't live without in my job.
As an attorney – Dropbox, As a creative – Eraser or Magisto. As a mom - Whataburger.

Neighborhood you call home.
Riverside Terrace. I love this area of Third Ward because it’s one of Houston’s best kept secrets! Our home was built in the 1930s and holds a very interesting history. This is the first neighborhood I have lived in where I am surrounded by friends who I can call on at any time for anything.

Three local businesses I love supporting.
Houston HemporiumTootsiesThe Vintage Contessa.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, where are we most likely to find you?
Breakfast – Tiny’s or Weights & Measures, Lunch – Relish or Flower Child, Dinner – Davis Street, Coppa or Backstreet Café.

What I learned about myself in pandemic.
As much as the introvert in me loves to work and stay in isolation, I need regular connection (in person) to keep me motivated and inspired.

What is your sign and do you identify with it?
Virgo – Yes, I do... perfectionist, clean freak, attention to detail. Yes, to all of the above!
