Happy Birthday, Nicole Derrick!

Our last birthday girl of 2016 is Nicole Derrick, who set out to change the bridal industry in Houston.

Happy birthday! We're bringing you a Crave cupcake to celebrate. What's your favorite flavor?
Hummingbird!

After 12 years in human resources management, you opened Olivia’s Bridal House. Why did you change careers?
I had a difficult time trying on the sample gowns at bridal stores years ago when I got married. I decided to open a bridal boutique that would cater to curvy and plus-sized brides by offering samples sizes 14 and above. We are the only kind of this type of bridal salon in Houston.

Tell us about your own wedding.
I got married at Parasio Maravilla (now known as Las Velas), and danced the night away in a custom Pnina Tornai gown!

Does the luxury bridal business do enough to create dresses for women of all sizes?
Absolutely not! Most bridal salons today carry very few plus-sized gown options that are on trend and fashion forward.

Latest trends in wedding gowns?
Separates are having a BIG moment! As well as add-ons like jackets, boleros and detachable skirts. Also, a lot of gowns are being offered in colors other than white or ivory and we love it!

Favorite part of your job?
Helping a bride who didn’t think she would have a stylish wedding dress find the perfect one.

What helps you relax?
A pedicure at Polish Parker and Roe.

Where do you always take your out of town guests?
The Breakfast Klub. Their visit isn’t complete if they haven’t stood in line for the delicious food!

Usual date night spot?
Vic & Anthony’s - I love a great steak!

Describe your perfect outfit?
I love wearing black! So, black leggings, sleeveless vest, Vince Camuto pumps and my Gucci Boston bag.

What's your guilty pleasure?
Tres Leches from Ooh La La.

Style icon? Business icon?
First Lady Michelle Obama. Sheryl Sandberg.

How many candles are you blowing out?
34…

Your birthday falls during a very festive month. Where do you go for a cure-all brunch?
Max’s Wine Dive. I need their French toast and mac and cheese in my life.
