More Than Meets the Eye

We asked a local interior designer for tips to make your small space appear larger.

The grande order of queso, your bank account balance, Target bikini bottoms. Bigger is almost always better. 'Tis the season for cleaning and refreshing, so we sat down with local design expert and UT grad Claire Brody, who's lent her mad fabric skills to Style Me Pretty, for five easy tips on how to fake your tiny space into appearing much larger.

1. Capitalize on natural light. Natural light is a small space's best friend. The more light that comes in the room, the bigger the space appears. Use soft, natural colors on windows to complement the light.

2. Paint with light hues. Light colors on the walls will help the space to feel light and airy. Cool, gray colors are a great way to achieve this feel.

3. Incorporate mirrors of varying size. Mirrors will reflect the light in the space which will create the illusion that the space is bigger than it actually is. Use varying mirror sizes and shapes for contrast.

4. Hide clutter. Keep the space from looking too busy by eliminating clutter. Use unexpected storage options such as ottomans, trunks, end tables and baskets to hide clutter.

5. Think statement. Instead of decorating with small furniture and decor pieces, add one larger statement piece to the space. A focal point will keep the room uncluttered and open.
